Motion in the Autumn 2012 PhotoYou Magazine

My Motion series of images, and an interview with yours truly, is featured in the current issue of Canon’s PhotoYou magazine which is apparently really huge in South East Asia. Always nice to have people like feature your work.

Jes Young Writes Drabbles for my Drabbles

A few years ago I made series of 45 ‘cinematic’ portraits. Each image was a little vignette , just a piece of a larger story where you got to fill in the rest with your imagination. As a play off the ‘picture is worth a thousand words’ thing, I called the series Drabbles after a narrative literary form of exactly one hundred words. So, 100 words of a 1000 where you fill in the other 900. Cute right?

Well today my long-time friend and author Jes Young, whose book “Tab Bennett and the Inbetween” you should go buy on the Amazon kindle store right now (Especially if you’re into elf princesses and love triangles), wrote a couple of actual drabbles to go with a couple of my actual Drabbles.  Very cool. And is even inviting her readers to submit their own, which is also very cool.

So go check them out and submit your own in the comments. I’m still waiting for someone to write one about the shot of Chris Berger at the top of this post.

You can check out the whole series again here: http://www.billwadman.com/drabbles/

And of course as always, there are prints available over at: http://www.wadmaneditions.com/

Eran Screaming

Never put me and Eran and a camera in a room. This is the result.

Print of the Day

Experiment time!

I’m in a printing frenzy today while updating my portfolio, so I thought I’d do a little special print sale of a street photograph I took last summer. Not the kind of thing I’m typically known for, but geometric, interesting and a little abstract. It was one of my favorites of the year despite the fact that I don’t like shooting street photography.

So I’m going to put up only five 11×14″ signed prints for sale for the low-low price of $50 plus shipping.

If you’ve ever wanted a print of my work for your wall. Now’s your chance. Get ’em while they’re hot!

Lighting Workshop Wrap-up and Seattle Announcement

So about 10 days ago I taught an intimate workshop on lighting portraits at Forgotten Works Studio in DUMBO Brooklyn. I think it was quite a success and I for one had a great time. Thanks to all the guys who participated and to Mary Catherine Green who came and modeled for us for a few hours. I think the size was perfect to make sure everyone got hands-on time with each setup.

There will be more workshop announcements in NYC area later in the summer but in the meantime I’m looking to expand westward.

Composite Portrait Photography from Pre-Vis to Print

Seattle, Washington on July 14th – $400

One of my internet buddies out in Seattle really wanted to make it to the Lighting workshop, but couldn’t justify flying across the country for it, which I totally understand.  However, I told him that if we could get enough people to sign up I could totally be the one to fly across the country.

So Mark and I are attempting to put together a workshop out in the Seattle area for mid-july. Most likely Saturday the 14th with a maximum of 20 participants.

It’s going to be an all day affair.  In the morning we’ll concept and shoot all of the source photos nessessary to put together a fairly complex composite portrait.  Then after lunch we’ll hole up in a studio space and I’ll walk you through step-by-step the process of pulling all those elements together in to a final image.  I can’t imagine more fun without it being illegal.  Ok, that’s not true, but it’s going to be a good time.

In order for us to make it feasible I’ll need at least 10 sign-ups by the second week in June so I can make travel plans and get us a studio.
But don’t worry, if for whatever reason we don’t make it to 10, your deposit will be refunded.

Go read more and sign-up over here:  http://www.billwadman.com/workshop/
Don’t forget to spread the words to your friends in the area.

‘Motion’ in Eloquence Magazine, May 2012

Six photographs from my Motion series are featured in this month’s Eloquence magazine from South Korea.

Apparently it’ll also be available in fancier magazine stores in NYC, LA, and SF, but you don’t have to wait, you can check out my interview on the interwebs. http://issuu.com/eloquence/docs/eloquence_may_05   My article starts on page 70.

Tab Bennett and The Inbetween Book Cover

Over the past few months I shot and composited together a book cover for my long-time friend Jes Young. Her new urban fantasy book “Tab Bennett and The Inbetween” is now available as an ebook on Amazon. So go buy it!

Seriously, I learned all kinds of new tricks for masking hair on this one.

Workshop Redux

I know I’ve been lazy on posts the past week.  I’ll be rectifying this terrible offense soon enough.

In the meantime, I wanted to let you guys know that there are still a couple of slots left for my May 12th Workshop on ‘Mastering Light’ for Portraits. I’ve even put up a page on my site where you can read more details and keep track of upcoming dates!

Announcing the Bill Wadman Portrait Workshop Series

I admit it. I love sharing what I know with people. In fact, that’s what most of the writing on this blog is about. But there’s something about teaching people in person which totally trounces writing, so I’m going to do what I’ve been meaning to do for years now.

I’m announcing a series of workshops here in New York City in which I’ll going to explain how I make portraits. One every couple of months is the plan. Since it’s a lot of information, we’re going to start at the beginning with the first workshop with ‘Light’. I’ll talk about controlling available light, how I use speedlights, studio strobes & modifiers, how to get the best out of your subject, lens selection, and more. You’ll have questions, I’ll have answers.

Saturday May 12th is going to be the date, and we’ll work together for 4 hours from 1PM to 5PM in the afternoon. I’ll have an attractive model of some persuasion for you to work with, and we’ll spend some time critiquing each other’s results so that all of us can walk away better photographers.

Total Workshop Fee for ‘Light’: $250 + $50 model fee

If you’re interested and would like to register, all I need right now is a $125 non-refundable deposit to save your spot.
Click below to be taken to the Paypal site to snag a seat for what I hope is going to be a great and knowledge packed afternoon.

Also, since this is the first one, I’m going to limit it to a fairly small number of participants so don’t wait too long to sign-up!

In subsequent workshops I plan to cover conceptual compositing, digital workflow, and retouching.
Don’t panic this is just the beginning. Very exciting!
