Day 184: Caroline

Caroline was one of my Drabbles subject. She’s the one who’s walking down the stairs like Cinderella. She came by today and I remembered how much fun she is to shoot. Great eyes.  I played around with some hot lights and crazy thin depth of field.  85mm f/1.2 Eat that Nikon people.  Just kidding.

Day 183: Eleanor

Eleanor and I spent time today, first getting her Super 8 projector lamp working and then using it to play back a handful of old films so that I could record them with my 5D2. Good stuff. The edit is uploading to Vimeo as we speak!  She’s the best.

Day 180: Jimmy

Jimmy owns the bodega down the street from my house. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Ponce as I remember.
The first time I shot him was back in 2007 for 365 Portraits.

Day 179: Atari

See what happens when my mother sends me my old Atari 2600? The mrs goes all retro.

Dan Benjamin

I keep a wish list of subjects that I’d love to meet and & shoot, and it’s a real treat that I got to snag one of them while visiting my sister and her family down in Austin over the holiday weekend.  This time it’s Dan Benjamin, the man, myth, and legend behind the 5by5 internet broadcast network.

If you don’t already listen to Dan’s shows, well then shame on you. Go right now and subscribe to Back to Work and if you’re a little on the geeky side, add Hypercritical.  This is good stuff and Dan is a consumate host with knowledgeable and usually quite endearing co-hosts.

Dan took time out of his incredibly busy schedule to meet us downtown at 7AM on a Sunday. That’s dedication folks. The streets were completely empty, but it made for interesting backgrounds and nice conversation. An hour walk, 150 or so pictures, a quick breakfast omelet when we were done and now we feel like old friends.

Seriously, this guy was so nice to Heather and I, that I have to think that he and Gina Trapani have some sort of side bet on who can endear themselves to me more. It’s a very very close call.

Day 174: J.P.

J.P. lives next to my sister Melissa down in Austin.  He’s an old Navy man who lived on a diesel submarine off the coast of the Soviet Union back in 1961-1964. They were loaded with nuclear weapons as a deterrent against a Soviet attack on America. The first of their kind.  These were remote controlled cruise missile nukes launched from the top deck of a surfaced sub.  Not the later Polaris missile which was fired from beneath the water.  Very interesting guy.
